Once you learn the techniques for baking bread, you’ll never settle for the stuff available in the stores. It doesn’t matter if you have little experience in baking; these two recipes are very easy to do.
Sweet Honey Bread
A cup of milk
2 tbsp of honey
1 and ½ tbsp of orange juice
Active dry yeast (1 pack)
8 tbsp of butter
Half a cup of whole wheat flour
2 and 2/3 cups of all purpose flour
2 tbsp of slightly melted butter
1 egg white and yolk
¼ cup of sugar
Pour the orange juice and milk in a saucepan. To this mix add the 8 tablespoons of butter and the honey. When baking bread of this type, you’ve got to mix these ingredients until the butter has softened. The mixture should be about 115 F. In another bowl, pour in half a cup of whole wheat flour, the all purpose flour and yeast.
To this mix add the eggs, salt, egg yolk and milk. Beat this with a mixer for three minutes. This is about 300 beats if you’re using hands. Put in the remaining flour in the mix. Beat for another minute or until the substance turns sticky. Cover the bowl and set in a warm location. Wait for an hour or until the dough doubles in size.
Prepare a couple of greased pans (8” round). Stir the dough you made for another minute. Grab a tablespoon of the dough and put it in the pan. The ingredients in this baking bread recipe are good for 10 rolls for each pan.
In a small bowl, combine the soft butter, sugar, honey (2 tbsp) and egg white. Mix and pour half of the contents on the rolls. Cover the bread rolls. When it doubles in size (in half an hour), pour the remaining liquid mix.
Preheat the oven at 350 F. Bake for 25 minutes. Let the rolls cool on the wire racks.
1 tsp of salt
1 1/3 cups of water (115 F)
3 cups of bread flour
Active dry yeast (1 package)
Pour the yeast in the water. Let it dissipate. Wait for five minutes and it should turn bubbly. Add one and a half cups of the flour. When baking bread of this type you need to add the salt too. Stir it for a couple of minutes. Pour in the remaining flour until soft dough is formed.
Spray some flour on the surface and begin kneading the dough. Keep doing this until the dough gets elastic. This should take about 10 minutes. Place this in a greased container. Leave it there for a couple of hours or until it rises. Punch the dough and shape into a rectangle.
Roll it securely and pinch the corners. Flatten the ends so they’re thinner than the rest of the dough. Set it seam side facing downwards on a cookie sheet. Bake it for half an hour.
Baking bread can be a lot of fun. With so many varieties to try, it’s an experience you can never get tired of.
